Community

Community is who is around you. "Who" can be humans, animals, waterbodies, plants, soil, and places. These communities often overlap like mycelial networks, demonstrating that we are all part of one big community: Earth. Fostering healthy community is the basis for human evolution and morality. It is critically important in today's world when the glue that holds us together has begun to wear away as people become more "individualized," and connect less in the flesh and more digitally. This is the most important page on this blog, as it shares resources and information for my local community, many of which are replecateable and useful for anyone, regardless where they belong to. Here, you can learn about projects and initiatives going on in my community, which I hope will inspire you to become more involved in yours. Let's uplift eachother, protect our animal kin, steward our lands and waterbodies, ensure food access for everyone, and create thriving spaces for all.

Community News

Yesterday across the country, people gathered in their hometowns to protest for the third "No Kings" event, a nationwide initiative to show the peoples' unrest. The events, though primarily targeted at protesting president Trump and the rise of facism, are a voice to the many concerns of the country; from Gaza to the war in Iran, to rising prices, and resisting I.C.E. Indeed current events have an uncanny resemblance to the events leading up to Hitler's rise of power. History is doomed to repeat itself if the people are ignorant and action is not taken. The "No Kings" protests popping up around the country is one way in which the people fight back.

I participated in the Belfast, Maine protest yesterday at the post office square. Estimates range around 1000 for how many people came to support. Two local reverends as well as senator Chip Curry came to speak, rallying the people with drumming and cries calling for I.C.E. to leave and for and end to the war. Hands held, song sung, people brought their whole hearts. For those present, it was like a static energy in the air- the kind that prickles your neck and gets your hairs standing on end.

I stood with my hastily made posterboard sign, featuring monarch butterflies, a humpback whale, a ruby-throated hummingbird, a bison, a salmon, and a woman's profile, which read "MIGRATION IS NATURAL." There was no end to the creativity people put into their signage. One local, who is famed for her resistance efforts and many political buttons, carried a cardboard toilet seat with the president's face in the center. Another sign read "TICK ID", with a deer tick, dog tick, and "luna-tick"- the third being the president's face with arachnid legs protruding from it. And another favorite of mine was my friend's, which was Eric Carle's "Hungry Hungry Caterpillar," wearing a nibbled on crown and saying, "Eat the Rich."

I am proud of my community- the people of Waldo County, Maine are fearless, emblazened folk with big hearts. When there is a call to come together, the people of Waldo never fail. I truly am grateful to be a part of this place and to call it home.
