Community

Community is who is around you. "Who" can be humans, animals, waterbodies, plants, soil, and places. These communities often overlap like mycelial networks, demonstrating that we are all part of one big community: Earth. Fostering healthy community is the basis for human evolution and morality. It is critically important in today's world when the glue that holds us together has begun to wear away as people become more "individualized," and connect less in the flesh and more digitally. This is the most important page on this blog, as it shares resources and information for my local community, many of which are replecateable and useful for anyone, regardless where they belong to. Here, you can learn about projects and initiatives going on in my community, which I hope will inspire you to become more involved in yours. Let's uplift eachother, protect our animal kin, steward our lands and waterbodies, ensure food access for everyone, and create thriving spaces for all.

Community News

Earlier this year, M.O.F.G.A. (Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners) announced the start of its new Ambassador Program; a program designed to help Maine / Eastern Wabanaki Territory residents form chapters to increase the organization's reach. Through the formation of chapters, volunteers in local communities will have the ability to tackle problems, network, and provide resources through the program. This year is the first year of the program, and so is still in an experimental phase. 2025 will serve as a time for exploration, brainstorming, and conversation among communities that will lay the groundwork for the future of the program.

I volunteered and was elected to serve a one-year term beginning this April for the Ambassador Program. Next week we have our first official meeting which will kick off the year and set us on the path towards our goals. In the meantime, I have been thinking about what exactly I'd like to accomplish for the program this year. It was an easy choice of what to focus on - food security is a topic I feel strongly for, as someone who has struggled with it throughout my life. My ultimate goal for this program would be to tackle food security, and ultimately food sovereignty, as a local community in Waldo County. Without spitting out all the numbers here, I can confidently say that a large portion of peoples in this area are struggling to put food on the table, and of those who are, it isn't often wholesome, nutritious food. While middle Maine has a thriving farm community and is much more progressive in terms of having accessible food pantries, give and take stands, community gardens, suppers, etc- food security is still a major issue, and as grocery store food prices rise, so too will hunger.

After this week's meeting I will be releasing my official plan for my term, as well as creating a section on the website dedicated to the project. There are several phases involved in the plan, which will hopefully connect people to resources, create new communal food growing and food sharing spaces, and give people the skills to procure and cook nutritious food. Keep an eye out for future blog posts and updates on that section, as I will be sharing resources as well as volunteer opportunities.
