Henna Mehndi
What is Henna?
Henna is a natural dye made from the plant Lawsonia inermis. The powdered plant matter is combined with pure water, essential oils, and sugar to create a paste. The paste is then used as the medium for creating designs. When used on the skin, it stains a beautiful reddish brown, and is sometimes used in conjunction with other plant dyes such as the dye "Jagua", which can produce darker blueish-black tones. Henna can last for several weeks with proper care, and so can serve as a beautiful temporary tattoo.
Henna has been used for dyeing and conditioning hair as well creating designs on the skin since ancient Egyptian times, and has widely been used in South Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. It is especially culturally significant in India, where mehndi designs hold symbolism, and are used during special times such as weddings.
My henna is sourced certified Organic from India, and I use only Organic essential oils and Organic coconut sugar to make the paste- combined with pure distilled water. Designs are then protected with Organic coconut oil. I never use henna that contains additives or preservatives. My designs typically feature plants and animals, and beautiful patternwork influenced heavily by Arabic designs.
