Seed Libraries

What is a seed library?

A seed library is a locally operated, free to the public seed bank. Typically established in libraries, schools, churches, food pantries, or other public spaces, a seed library is an accessible way for locals to acquire seeds for growing their own food. It is a wonderful way to bring community together, and there's lots of good reasons to start one:

  • Increasing circulation at your local library (which helps fund and keep them operating!)
  • Aid in food security
  • Offers an opportunity to get locals, especially youth, engaged and interested in gardening
  • Educates people about seed saving
  • Spotlights local seed producers
  • Preserves genetic diversity and keeps seed varieties out of the hands of monopolies
  • Saves people money
  • Aids in climate resilience and adaptation
  • Introduces people to new foods and varieties
